While we'd visited Cabo San Lucas in 2013, it was nice to return for more diving and kayaking, plus birdwatching and exploring its sister city, San Jose del Cabo.
Lessons learned:
- Cities: Cabo San Lucas is better for diving, watersports and bars/nightlife; San Jose del Cabo is better for birdwatching, art, and culture
- Diving: It's good to take your first night dive at a site you've dived during the day
- Birdwatching: Take at least one tour (our desert tour was great, and we wish we'd taken an estuary tour too)
- Whale sharks: The government wasn't yet allowing visitors at El Mogote, so visit in November or December to balance availability and water temperatures
- Deals: Drinks and activities can be surprisingly expensive, so happy hours and the Los Cabos Passport are helpful
- Dining: Enjoy the great local food in both cities, but try to avoid eating at SJD airport (almost all options are American chains...and one seemingly made us sick)
